How Fish Finders Work

If you have ever tried fishing but could not seem to find any fish, you may want to think about or look into trying sonar fish finders. Fish finders are a great tool whether you are an amateur or a competitive fisherman. Read more for an explanation about how fish finders work.

The equipment

The fish finder consists of an above-water, in-boat display and an underwater transmitter that is attached to the hull of the boat. The display is attached to a power source and sits in an easily visible place inside the boat. The transducer sensors are mounted on the bottom of the boat. It is the transducer that gathers information from the water underneath the boat, which is then displayed on the screen in the boat.

The process

Fish finders work using sonar, a technique that employs sound waves to gather physical information. The transducers on the bottom of the boat emit a sound wave towards the stream, ocean or lake bed. When the waves bounce back, the equipment measures the amount of time the waves take to travel back to the sensors. Because the swim bladders of fish have a different density than the water in the stream or ocean, the sound waves react differently and the equipment records this difference.

The display

As the transducer gathers information through the use of sound waves, it sends this information back to the display on the top of the boat. When the sound waves come back more quickly because they bounced off a fish, an arch appears on the screen. Some devices use a fish symbol in place of the arch. The display creates a sort of map of what is in the range of the transducer, and you can cast your line accordingly.

Fish finders are a helpful tool whether you are a novice or expert fisherman. You can use sonar to help you find the fish, but only you can reel in that prize-winning catch. Happy fishing!
